The Zeeman effect is the splitting of atomic spectral lines in a magnetic field. The simplest form is the division of a single spectral line into three components, known as the normal Zeeman effect. In this experiment, both the normal and anomalous Zeeman effects are studied using a cadmium spectral lamp as a sample. The cadmium lamp is exposed to various magnetic field strengths, and the splitting of cadmium lines (normal Zeeman effect at 643.8 nm, red light; anomalous Zeeman effect at 508.6 nm, green light) is investigated using a Fabry-Perot interferometer. The results lead to a fairly accurate value of the Bohr magneton.
