"The Cats of Mirikitani" is a documentary that follows the journey of Jimmy Mirikitani, an 80-year-old Japanese-American street artist living in New York, as he rediscovers the 60 years he lost. It is also a film that depicts the healing of his heart through friendship and art.
On September 11, 2001, amidst the tension of the World Trade Center collapsing, there was a man engrossed in his painting. His name is Jimmy Mirikitani. Born in California, he was sent to a Japanese-American internment camp during World War II and renounced his U.S. citizenship in protest. His rebellious life began from that moment. Linda Hattendorf, the director of this film, who had occasionally filmed him, bought his paintings and invited him to her apartment that day, and from there, their strange cohabitation began. It was a journey of two people working together to confront Jimmy Mirikitani's painful past.
