MICHAEL JACKSON / Michael Jackson Participates!
"The Wiz / The Wiz"
1978. Import Official 2CD Edition. 26 tracks in total.
The soundtrack of the 1978 musical where Diana Ross played Dorothy and Michael Jackson portrayed the Scarecrow. Supervised by Quincy Jones, it features a generally grand big band performance, but also includes many popular fusion session musicians of that era.
Based on "The Wizard of Oz," this Broadway musical was turned into a movie by "Motown," which produced stars like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.
The leads are Diana Ross and the pre-fame Michael Jackson. It’s surprising that this pair didn’t generate more buzz given their stature. Furthermore, the music was directed by Quincy Jones, and the musicians involved were all top-tier talent of that time. Notably, Patti Austin is in the chorus, alongside Richard Tee and Steve Gadd... just naming these artists could keep you awake all night.
The song "Easy on Down..." is likely familiar as the theme for the TV show "Kin-chan's Costume Grand Prix." The final song "Believe in Yourself" is powerfully sung by Diana Ross and Lena Horne, and it’s simply tear-jerking.
