In 1982, New Balance itself called it a running shoe with "990 points out of 1000," and succeeded in developing the 《990》.
After that, the 99X series was upgraded with the highest technology of the time, becoming a brand signature that continues to reign as the "face" of New Balance.

The 《991》 was dropped in 2001 as the 8th generation of the 990 series.
In December 2021, a special edition using Harris Tweed was dropped to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its debut.

The "991" is also famous as a model loved by Steve Jobs.
The upper features "premium nubuck," which is the brushed surface of top-grain leather instead of suede, and a special combination with the long-established British fabric maker "Harris Tweed."
The color is a beige-tinged gray, a very nice color, a so-called greige.
