Beetlejuice is the American 1988 gothic dark fantasy comedy horror movie directed by Tim Burton, from a screenplay by Michael McDowell and Warren Skaaren based on a story by McDowell and Larry Wilson. The film stars Michael Keaton as the titular character, alongside Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder. The storyline follows recently deceased couple Adam and Barbara Maitland who were living in and decorating their large country home in Winter River, Connecticut. The couple eventually realise that they are ghosts trapped in their country home and come across a Handbook for the Recently Deceased. The house is sold to a young family and Barbara & Adam are not happy about this invasion. While reading the handbook looking for ways to remove the Deetz family from their house, they see an advertisement on television for “Bio-Exorcism” services offered by a black-eyed, green-haired entity named Betelgeuse. The story continues in bizarre, supernatural and spooky twists and turns that came to be Tim Burton’s unique style, always with an emphasis on the gothic, sinister and macabre, but always with a sense of humour! This film is a Halloween classic, with Beetlejuice’s iconic black and white stripey suit becoming a favourite spooky costume. In 2024 the sequel, titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was released in cinemas, with Keaton, Ryder and O’Hara reprising their roles with Tim Burton returning as director.
