Ammonites, once thriving in Earth's oceans for over 300 million years, were a type of extinct cephalopod. Their bodies hung from the shell's large opening, allowing them to swim and float freely. Cavities within the shell provided buoyancy. Upon death, their shells sank to the ocean floor, preserving easily in sediment. The shells typically coiled into planispirals, earning them the nickname 'snakestones'. This particular specimen hails from the genus perisphinctes, living around 200 million years ago. Ammonites met their demise during the K-Pg mass extinction event 66 million years ago. You can select between a 0.75-1.5" ammonite fossil in an acrylic case or two smaller 0.25-.5" fossils in a similar case, making an excellent addition to your fossil collection.
