American edition, a work that could be called the cultivation of the China Service. However, the protagonist is not a diplomat, but a military officer who later becomes the head of the American Expeditionary Force (in China?). Throughout his life, the strange closeness of US-China relations and the stereotypical pattern of US-China relations, in which America is fascinated by China but ultimately betrayed by it, are described in detail. In the process of demonstrating this pattern, the Kuomintang, who were inevitably Stilwell's counterpart, are depicted negatively, and the role of the Chinese Communist Party as their shadow remains blurred in the overall depiction. As a result, the depiction of China leaves the impression that a cultural-theoretical approach from the angle of the incomprehensible Orient came to the fore. My hindsight is that this approach alone has omitted the reality of some grotesque aspects of US-China relations in the 1930s and 40s, where China's schemes and information strategies and the political intentions of the recipients on the American side were complexly intertwined. Later, while reading various works by Tuchman, I encountered a surprising fact. That is, Tuchman was a member of the Institute of Pacific Relations and stayed in Japan for several years.
